Let’s talk about winter wedding photography! Most of the time, when we think about weddings, we immediately picture summer—warm, gentle weather, long moments spent outdoors, and, if we’re lucky, beautiful golden light at the end of the day for stunning couple portraits.
That said—and this is very important—the unique atmosphere of winter, both magical and cozy, is so special that it would be a shame to miss out on it. Guests are often more available than in the middle of summer, and reception venues usually offer off-season rates. The combination is pretty appealing. Getting married out of season also makes your day truly out of the ordinary, turning it into a magical and unforgettable event for everyone.

As a photographer, the biggest difference between a summer wedding and a winter wedding is the light. Several factors must be considered (especially in the mountains): where will the sun set, and at what time? Night falls very quickly in winter, so it’s essential to plan ahead and carefully choose the location for your couple session. Weather conditions also change faster in winter—especially in mountainous areas. It’s always best to think together about a good backup plan in case of very bad weather.
If you’re brave, snowy photos are absolutely magical! Getting married in winter offers unique and breathtaking photo opportunities. Imagine kissing under falling snow or standing in front of a snow-covered mountain landscape. Snow adds a magical touch to your wedding photos, and these images will stay with you forever. To make the most of this snowy environment, it’s important to choose a skilled and creative wedding photographer who knows how to capture these moments. Winter weddings are a specialty that requires real expertise.
Bad weather—even if it’s not what you initially hoped for—adds character and depth to your photos. A dramatic grey sky, heavy rain, or a beautiful snowfall can make your images truly stand out. They’ll feel stronger and more emotional. Let go and embrace the elements. You’ll feel happier and less stressed, and the story of your day—told through images—won’t be diminished by the weather. The weather should never overshadow your beautiful story.
The best advice I can give you is to be yourselves, enjoy the snow if you love winter—but most importantly, dress warmly. Wear wool base layers under your clothes, good socks, and insulated boots. Think about hand warmers and hot water bottles. As long as you’re warm, you’ll be able to enjoy your day and the outdoors, even in the heart of winter. One last thing: think about your guests too, and share these tips with them so they can fully enjoy your winter wedding without freezing toes.
Winter is the perfect season for truly original photos—skiing, sledding, on top of a glacier. Think fairy lights, lantern releases, and sparklers: winter is ideal for all of this. Be yourselves and dare to express who you are. Your photos will feel more natural and will truly reflect your couple.
